Swan Districts midfielder Zane Trew was West Coast's first pick in the 2021 rookie draft.
West Coast career[]
Predicted to be drafted in the 2020 national draft, Trew surprisingly went undrafted until the rookie draft, where the Eagles were quick to snap him up. On being drafted, he was described as a strong-bodied midfielder with clean hands and excellent stoppage craft.[1] Trew spent the 2021 season developing with West Coast's reserves. After a delayed start to his second season due to shin splints, he worked his way into the senior side and made an impressive debut against Richmond, but was dropped after a quiet game the following week.
Delisted at the end of 2022, Trew was redrafted in the rookie draft. He added another four senior games in 2023, starting three of them as the sub, and finished runner-up behind skipper Jackson Nelson in the WAFL best and fairest despite only playing 11 games.
One of the last players signed on for 2024, Trew made just one appearance as the substitute prior to the departure of Adam Simpson, before being called up by caretaker coach Jarrad Schofield and playing six of the last seven games.
