Founded in 1885 as the Victorians Football Club, West Perth was a foundation member of the West Australian Football League in 1885. The club merged with West Australian Football Club in 1888 and the merged entity played two seasons as "Metropolitans" before reverting to its current name.

West Perth has won 19 premierships, including the 2013 flag. Known officially as the "Falcons" (and unofficially as the Cardinals or Cardies, or the Garlic Munchers), the club played their home games at Leederville Oval until 1993 when they shifted north to Arena Joondalup.

The club's city "zone" includes the far north-western suburbs of Perth such as Joondalup, Wanneroo, Yanchep and Quinns Rock, while its country zone includes Merredin, Bruce Rock, Corrigin and Southern Cross.

Eagles players to have been recruited from West Perth include premiership players Craig Turley, Quinten Lynch, Mark Seaby, Mark LeCras, Jack Darling and Mark Hutchings.
