(108th Eagles player)
An exciting utility player, Trent Cummings was once a first-round draft pick for Fitzroy. His great grandfather had played 55 games for the Lions at the beginning of the century.
Fitzroy career
Originally from Central District, Cummings managed 27 games for Fitzroy in three years before the team folded at the end of the 1996 season.
Cummings wasn’t selected by Brisbane as one of their 8 merger selections, and instead went into the draft where West Coast grabbed him with a late pick they had obtained from Port as part of the Lyle/Bond/Downsborough for Gardiner deal.
West Coast career
Cummings had an unhappy time of it in the West. He was coming off a knee reconstruction in his first season and spent the majority of the season at Peel Thunder, managing just two games at AFL level in the middle of the year.
In the 1998 pre-season he suffered another knee injury that ultimately ended his career. He was delisted at the end of the season without adding to his tally.
In an interesting postscript, he sued the club, the AFL, the WAFC and Subiaco Oval for the knee injury that curtailed his career, and ended up with a six-figure settlement.
Post-AFL career
An accountant by trade, Cummings spent several seasons as the coach of Victorian Amateur Football Association outfit Old Essendon Grammarians.
