A great of the Essendon Football Club, Tim Watson spent one year on West Coast's list but never appeared for the club.

Essendon career, part one[]

Originally from Dimboola in western Victoria, Watson made his VFL debut for the Bombers in 1977 as a 15 year old. He won four best and fairests with Essendon, and played in their 1984 and 1985 premierships. After captaining the side from 1989 to 1991, Watson retired at the end of the 1991 season.

West Coast career[]

West Coast sprung a massive surprise by picking the retired Watson in the pre-season draft, possibly as a part of some mind games between old rivals Mick Malthouse and Kevin Sheedy. Although he did come to Perth for a week during the pre-season, he had no intention of appearing for West Coast and instead spent 1992 in Channel 7's commentary box.

Essendon career, part two[]

Having been removed from the Eagles list, Watson then reversed his retirement decision and returned to the Bombers for 1993, just in time to help the club to the 1993 flag. He retired again for good at the end of 1994, after 307 games in red and black (and none in blue and gold).

Post-VFL/AFL career[]

Watson coached St Kilda for two seasons, resigning at the end of the 2000 season after the Saints won the wooden spoon. He has been a long time member of the Seven commentary team, also reading the station's sports news in Melbourne.

Watson's son Jobe has also played for the Bombers, captaining the club between 2010 and 2015 and winning three club best and fairests.

Awards and achievements[]

Premiership medals in 1984, 1985 and 1993 (with Essendon)

Essendon Best and Fairest in 1980, 1985, 1988 and 1989
