Stevan Jackson was a laconic big-bodied key forward from South Fremantle.

West Coast career[]

Jackson was a pre-draft selection for West Coast in 1988 along with some bigger names such as Sumich, Pyke and Turley.

He made an eye-catching start to his career, booting half a dozen goals against the Bears on debut and kicking 14 goals in his first 4 outings. He had another purple patch at the end of 1989, kicking 12 goals in the last 3 rounds and polling maximum Brownlow votes in back to back games against Geelong and Carlton. Jackson finished the year with 38 goals from 16 games, only narrowly missed out on the club goalkicking award to fellow rookie Sumich despite playing 3 less games and spending time helping out in the ruck.

He didn’t reach quite the same heights in his second year, coming in and out of the side and managing only 20 goals in 15 games, though impressive showings in finals against Melbourne and Essendon gave some hope for a return to form in 1991.

It didn’t eventuate, Jackson played just 7 games in 1991 and took no part in the finals series. At the end of the year he was traded to Richmond. The pick obtained in the trade was used on 100-game player Daniel Metropolis (who coincidentally also kicked 6 goals on debut).

Richmond career[]

Jackson spent four injury-plagued years at Punt Road, kicking 30 goals in 21 senior games.

Post-VFL/AFL career[]

He moved into coaching after his AFL career ended, having stints at suburban Melbourne clubs Blackburn and Wantirna South before returning to WA and taking the senior role at South Mandurah in the Peel Football League.
