Once again West Coast were the victims of the AFL's policy that a final must be played in Melbourne each week, forced to travel to meet the lower-placed Carlton who had lost the week before. The Blues dominated early, leading by five goals at the first change and maintaining the gap before inflating the margin in the final stages to end the reign of Mick Malthouse on a flat note. Dean Kemp led West Coast with 26 possessions and Guy McKenna had 23.

From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"The Blues imposed themselves on the contest from the first bounce and a seven-goal (to two) opening term was always going to make it tough for the Eagles, who prefer to strangle their opponents to death rather than slice them open with a goalkicking frenzy.

One passage, at the 23-minute mark of the first quarter, encapsulated the game. The ball was kicked towards West Coast full-forward Scott Cummings, who led out with Stephen Silvagni in hot pursuit. Silvagni somehow edged his way in front of Cummings, won the race for the ball and kept running once he had taken possession. With his pass he found Brett Ratten in the centre.

The Blues' playmaker then kicked to centre half-forward where Beaumont floated in front of the pack to take a strong mark and, with McKenna ready to stand the mark, he simply wheeled on to his left foot and banged through the Blues' fifth goal."[1]
