From the papers[]
The Age[]
"West Coast had a dozen excellent players and no bad ones. Geelong had a handful of good performances but just as many who failed pitifully. The Eagles led at every change, and were comprehensively better from the time Mark Bairstow gave the Cats a 16-point lead, 10 minutes into the second term. After that, West Coast booted 16 goals to seven, in the process cutting Geelong to almost half last weekend's score and sending the Cats on the hard route to the Grand Final.
Though the scorelines did not initially reflect it, Geelong was reduced to filling in the cracks in its fortress from the first bounce. Most notably, full-forward Peter Sumich was too quick and skilfull for Steve Handley, and had six goals to half-time. Malcolm Blight was forced to call upon the supreme odd-jobs man, Barry Stoneham, to fill that gap.
But more sandbags were required elsewhere. Peter Matera was so dominant on his wing in the first quarter against Sean Simpson that Blight had to swap his wingers, Peter Riccardi taking over an unenviable task. Matera was lulled for a period, but he still finished with 35 disposals, two goals and the hard-won respect of a pro-Geelong crowd of 71,000."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Geelong lifted the tempo and snatched a 16-point break early in the second quarter before West Coast bagged four goals in five min utes to set up its 15-point lead at half-time.
The Cats got as close as seven early in the third period before the Eagles took over, pushing their lead to 57 halfway through the last quarter.
West Coast had clear winners all over the field with dashing winger Peter Matera being the most dominant with 35 possessions and two goals, while fellow winger Chris Mainwaring had 27 touches.
Ruckman Paul Harding dominated the big-man duels and full-forward Peter Sumich snared eight goals, including six in the first half, and Don Pyke successfully tagged classy Geelong on-baller Garry Hocking."[2]
