Exciting ruck Sarah Lakay was West Coast's fourth pick in the 2021 draft.

West Coast career[]

A former basketballer, Lakay shot up the draft board after breaking the AFLW combine records for both the standing vertical jump and running vertical jump. On being drafted, she was described as having a strong overhead mark and inherent athleticism.[1]

Lakay made her debut in the third round of 2022, and spent the rest of the season sharing ruck duties with Parris Laurie. With Laurie's retirement, she took over as lead ruck the following season and finished second in the league in total hitouts. Unfortunately she struggled through 2023, with a back injury limiting her to just two games. Lakay returned to something approaching full fitness in 2024, missing just two games and finishing fourth in the side in clearances.
