Victorian forward Ryan Maric was taken by West Coast with the first overall selection in the 2023 mid-season rookie draft.

West Coast career[]

A Drouin junior, Maric transformed himself from a 107kg country league full-forward to an 83kg skilful running forward in order to get drafted.[1] After playing limited football with Gippsland Power in 2022, he impressed with the Power and in VFL appearances for Box Hill in 2023 and was widely considered the best available in the mid-season draft. West Coast, languishing in bottom place, agreed, making him the final addition to the 2023 playing list.

Given the number 41 guernsey, Maric had just one hit-out in the WAFL before being rushed into the senior side for his debut. He immediately impressed with two goals, and held his spot for the remainder of the season. He remained in the senior side for most of 2024, shifting from the forward line to a wing role during the season.
