Bottom-of-the-table Collingwood produced the upset of the season, knocking off the previously undefeated Eagles in a see-sawing match at the MCG. West Coast fought back from a halftime deficit to be ahead by 8 points at the final change and then 13 points early into the last quarter, before a seven-goal quarter from the Magpies got them just their second win of the season. Chad Fletcher stepped up in the absence of the suspended Chris Judd, amassing 25 touches and 3 goals, and Dean Cox continued his strong form with 30 hitouts and 23 touches.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The big wins for the Pies came at either end of the ground. In defence, James Clement soundly beat Ashley hansen on his MCG debut, Tarkyn Lockyer kept Phil Matera and at times Ashley Sampi in check, while Shane Wakelin limited Michael Gardiner's influence after a fine start and Simon Prestigiacomo kept Quinten Lynch to one goal.

Lynch continues to be his own worst enemy, dropping marks, missing close range set shots, which should be gimmes at this level, and giving away free kicks.

He gave away five free kicks as well as a 50m penalty which resulted in a goal to Cameron Cloke."[1]

The Sunday Age[]

"The impact of Chris Judd being forced to watch from the stands was probably minimal as Ben Cousins was his usual prolific best, ably supported by Stenglein, Daniel Kerr, Chad Fletcher and ruckman Dean Cox, who was as good as any player on the ground.

Cox dominated the early stages of the match, both in the air and on the ground, and it appeared the margin was about the only thing worth considering as the Eagles skipped out of the blocks with three unanswered goals, two from the boot of big man Michael Gardiner playing at full-forward.

But characterising their day, the Magpies zoned well and found some run, taking advantage of the Eagles' players running off their opponents. By the 20-minute mark of the second quarter they had drawn level, exerting some of the fiercest pressure on the Eagles that the Perth team has seen all season. Tackle followed smother, followed tackle, followed contested ball, followed tackle. It was brilliant, hard football that was tiring just to watch."[2]
