West Coast prevailed in an entertaining contest in front of a big Sydney crowd, most of which were hoping to see Tony Lockett break the league's goalscoring record. The Eagles were able to hang onto the lead as Sydney squandered a number of chances in the final term. Plugga needed six goals to pass Gordon Coventry's record but finished with three as the Swans fell 13 points short. Peter Matera kicked two goals from 31 possessions and Mitchell White scored three from 24 touches.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Lockett missed two shots in the final term, one early and one mid-way through. Then, with six minutes left and Sydney ahead by four points, Matthew Nicks created a turnover with a strong tackle on Peter Matera, one of the Eagles' best on the day. Kelly finished with the ball but could only manage a point.

Immediately, Mitchell White goaled for the Eagles to lead by a point. Then a mix-up between Troy Luff and Daryn Cresswell at centre half-back led to another goal by White. That gave the Eagles a seven-point lead with the clock ticking down. When Matera goaled two minutes later, with a clever snap from wide on the right, the Eagles held an unassailable 13-point lead.

After that loose first quarter, Sydney's defence tightened noticeably, Luff exerted pressure across the half-back line and full-back Andrew Dunkley improved on Cummings."[1]
