From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Another reason for the Eagles' success yesterday was Peter Matera at half-back, along with Guy McKenna and Fraser Gehrig. Matera was brilliant in his 150th game, providing Ricky Olarenshaw with a nightmarish afternoon of unsuccessful catch-up, despite Olarenshaw's attempts to restrict him on the last line of defence.

Glen Jakovich was also prominent at centre half-back, save for a superb second quarter at centre half-forward when he kicked one goal and set up several others by bullocking Essendon's defence out of the way.

Only Stephen Alessio stood tall up front for the Bombers. He dominated Ryan Turnbull to such an extent that Malthouse finally pitted him against the rampant Jakovich.

Also busy and skilled was Cousins, who fired at full-forward after Ball's departure."[1]
