Fitzroy and West Coast brought AFL football to Canberra for the first time, but the match failed to reach any real heights with the Eagles recording a 28 point win thanks mainly to a big second term. Defender Guy McKenna had 23 touches and Ryan Turnbull kicked two goals from 17 disposals.

From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"As tends to be the case when the Eagles are on show, they won it with an even overall contribution, rather than relying on matchwinners. Malthouse and his match committee chose Drew Banfield to shut down Fitzroy captain Brad Boyd. It proved to be a pivotal duel, Boyd having his worst game of a fine season.

West Coast's defence won handsomely, with John Worsfold obliterating the dangerous Chris Johnson and Glen jakovich tidying up throughout.

The Lions drew contributions from John McCarthy, who overcame a slow start to kick three goals, and first-gamer Jeff Bruce, who finished with three.

Overall, the Lions had more of the play than the score suggested."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"When veteran John McCarthy (three goals) decided it was time to make his presence felt up front late in the first half, you felt that just maybe the Lions might give the Fitzroy-orientated crowd more to cheer about.

And then, oh so aptly, Lion Jeff Bruce lifted the roof on his name sake stadium by kicking a goal with his first touch in AFL football. And then two more. Forget the fact he missed a couple of telling shots in the final quarter — put it down to experience.

West Coast, jolted by the early loss of forward Brett Heady (shoulder), stayed at arm's length with pure common sense football.

Drew Banfield mightn't have been swimming in stats last night, but the gag job he did on Fitzroy captain Brad Boyd around the ground set the Eagles up. Guy McKenna was instrumental in shutting down the Lions' forward line early, while Glen Jakovich and Ryan Turnbull were periodic performers up forward."[2]
