From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"A furious opening term set the stage for a top-class encounter. Flower, playing at half-forward because of the brilliant form on the wings this season of two former WA players, Warren Dean and Alan Johnson, was an early instigator.

But when he limped to a forward pocket after a knock on his thigh, it seemed to be the signal for Melbourne to stop its running. The Eagles capitalised and a seven-goal surge saw them take hold of the match with a 35-point lead.

That ascendancy was brought about by the Eagles' two most experienced players - skipper Ross Glendinning and rover Robert Wiley.

Wiley, stunned by a heavy knock in the first quarter, came back to life early in the second term to post two quick goals. Glendinning, who had overcome a fit of the fumbles in the first term, was switched to full-forward and revived himself with the next two goals."[1]
