West Coast ended up on the wrong side of a spirited scrap with Essendon, losing by just one straight kick in a gruelling encounter at Perth Stadium. The Eagles trailed for much of the match but never let the deficit get out of hand, and Jack Williams's third goal of the match put them six points adrift with a minute to play, but they were unable to find a tying goal. Tim Kelly had 29 possessions and nine clearances and Jake Waterman equalled Williams' three-goal haul, but the Eagles lost the in-form Elliot Yeo (playing his 200th AFL game) to a groin injury and Noah Long with a knee.
