West Coast hammered St Kilda early, kicking the first nine goals to race out to a big quarter-time lead, and ended up with their biggest-ever win over the Saints. With intermittent showers sweeping over Subiaco, St Kilda were able to turn the match into an arm wrestle in the second term but poor kicking prevented them from making any headway on the scoreboard. The floodgates opened in the last term as the Eagles pushed the lead into triple figures shortly before the final siren. Josh Kennedy kicked five of his side's nine goals in the first quarter, but was overtaken by Mark LeCras who finished with six majors.

From the coach[]
"We had a good day today, defensively particularly in the whole match, so we’re happy about that.
"Our team defence [pleased me the most]. I thought we started well with the clearances and contested ball. Our first possession was clearly getting us some dominance and we made the most of it. We kicked pretty straight today.
"...We just asked to continue to improve the way we want to play. It wasn’t one of those soul searching weeks. We played a really good side against Geelong and we weren’t good enough. But as I've said it’s just a long year, so for us to rebound and play well is pleasing. Im happy with the margin, but we’ve still got some work to do.
"...I thought our captain played well. Shannon had a pretty good game. Obviously our forwards had a good look at it. Throughout the day we had 60-plus inside 50s. I think players had little patches here and there where they really dominated. LeCras, to kick six played more as a permanent forward this week and got rewarded.
"...Look, we had a good win, but we’ve got a lot of work to do still. We really rated St Kilda and their pressure and the way they’ve been going about it. They had an off day today and I think we took advantage, but I’m no getting carried away with the win. Players know that as well."[1]
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Led by Nic Naitanui’s ruck brilliance, the Eagles dominated the stoppages, waltzing out of the centre with ease and spotting up the forwards, who were allowed a clear path at the ball by a lacklustre St Kilda defence.
By the end of the first quarter Kennedy had kicked five, the Eagles led the inside-50s 24-7 and were out to a 48-point lead.
Things didn’t get any better in the second quarter, with Mark Hutchings kicking his second goal and LeCras his third.
Making matters worse, the Saints butchered what opportunities they did manage to create."[2]
The Age[]
"The demolition job started from the first bounce - one which drifted favourably for Nic Naitanui. The Eagles ruckman needs little assistance from the umpires to make an impact, but he gladly obliged, guiding the ball into the path of Luke Shuey, who drove the hosts forward and helped set up the game's opening goal - kicked by Josh Kennedy.
West Coast went inside 50 from the next centre bounce too, and again the Coleman medallist goaled. Wash, rinse, repeat. By quarter time he had five majors, making mincemeat of Sam Gilbert. It begged the question as to why the Saints had opted against picking any of tall defensive trio Tom Lee, Hugh Goddard or Luke Delaney to replace sore veteran Sam Fisher, especially given that spearheads Jeremy Cameron and Jesse Hogan had taken hold of the St Kilda backline in recent weeks. Moreover it reinforced that the Saints miss the suspended Jake Carlisle - if it's possible to miss something you've never really had.
Not that the blame for the early carnage should be laid squarely at the feet of the Saints' defence. Matt Priddis was irrepressible in the clinches, Andrew Gaff's run was telling, while Naitanui was schooling Tom Hickey in the ruck."[3]
PerthNow[]
"It was clinical, brutal stuff from West Coast as it set up the win with a nine goal to one first quarter.
St Kilda was softened up around the ball as the one-two combo of Nic Naitanui and Matt Priddis wreaked havoc, before Josh Kennedy delivered the final blow. After blow. After blow.
Kennedy had five disposals in the opening term and kicked 5.0. Call him the executioner.
He didn’t kick another for the rest of the game but it didn’t matter, with Mark LeCras chipping in with six of his own to keep the scoreboard ticking over."[4]
