Bouncing back from the previous week's loss, West Coast looked to have built a match-winning lead by halftime, but took their foot off the pedal in the third quarter to let the Saints back into the game. After St Kilda got back within 15 points in the third, the Eagles steadied to run out comfortable winners. Ruckman Dean Cox kicked a career-high five goals, while usual defender Beau Waters contributed two goals to go with 27 possessions.

From the coach[]

"We had to work pretty hard for it but we knew we would. You don't know when the opposition are going to stretch you at their absolute best. It could be in the third quarter, the second quarter, today it was in the third quarter. They got up and going a bit. Really, our players responded to get back to what they were all about and really keep the game out of reach.

"I don't think the Saints lifted their intensity, I think they came out to play with the intensity they brought from the start. I didn't sense that our players weren't ready to play but things didn't go really well for us and they got on top. Sometimes those things happen and then as we readjust, things don't work perfectly as you go and it takes a little bit of time to get it right again. The aim is to give the opposition no minutes to dominate the game and that's where we would like to get to but we were playing a pretty good side and in very good form, and they had a period where they got on top.

"...I was really pleased with the way the boys went about (covering for Priddis). We used Adam Selwood through the midfield and he was sore and he wasn't anywhere near 100 per cent but we've got a few different options we can look at through there at different times. Masten got a bit more time through the midfield, Koby Stevens in the last quarter as well which was great for him."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"After a totally dominant first half, West Coast looked capable of a landslide victory despite the absence of plough horse Matt Priddis, who was sidelined to clear his thoughts from last week's concussion.

It was anything but a landslide though as West Coast hit quicksand in the third term as St Kilda rallied to trim the margin to 15 points.

Lenny Hayes' inspiration was infectious as Leigh Montagna and Jack Steven took up the cudgels to get the Saints back into the game.

They hit hard, ran hard and generally forced West Coast into errors, a far cry from the first half when the Eagles had composure and control."[2]

The Age[]

"West Coast midfielder Matt Priddis was a late withdrawal due to last week's concussion.

But his absence was barely felt in the opening half as the likes of Shuey, Scott Selwood, Brad Sheppard, Matt Rosa and Waters picked up the slack, with Cox booting four goals.

But all that changed in the third quarter as St Kilda lifted their intensity and West Coast's intent dropped off.

Six goals to one for the term closed the margin to 21 points at the final break, but McGinnity got the crucial opening goal of the fourth quarter to kill off the contest."[3]

PerthNow[]

"After three early goals to the Saints, the Eagles replied with six unanswered goals in the second term to open up a 49-point lead at the main break.

The feast of goals included long-range bombs from Waters and Brad Sheppard, who took full advantage of an open forward line and lacklustre defensive effort from the Saints.

West Coast’s press went missing during last week’s 61-point loss to Essendon, but returned with devastating results in the first half.

It proved too much for goalsneak Stephen Milne, who completed two air swings during the second quarter while under immense pressure from the Eagles defence before ultimately turning the ball over."[4]
