West Coast broke a streak of seven straight Derby losses, leading from start to finish despite a poor third quarter and the withdrawal shortly before the bounce of veterans Daniel Kerr and Andrew Embley. Matt Priddis was judged best on ground and awarded the Glendinning Medal for his 27 possession effort, and Quinten Lynch worked hard for 22 possessions and 9 marks. The club was later fined $5,000 for the withdrawal of Embley, with the wingman named on team sheets despite failing a fitness test.

From the coach[]
"I'm really pleased with the boys with a stronger effort over a longer period of the game and against good opposition. We need to maintain that over four quarters. In our losses this year we have just had lapses and today the boys really fought to make sure those lapses weren't going to raise their heads.
"It was a credit that the players just got on with business (after late changes). The way that Gaff prepared, the way that Sheppard prepared. And also Masten, who expected to be the sub and having to come on and play longer ground time. Those players just got on with the job. They are only young players who showed great maturity.
"...Lynch and Kennedy were big threats all day, Cox and Naitanui are becoming bigger threats with more time up forward, and Darling's been outstanding with his aerial stuff."[2]
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"West Coast denied Fremantle their run and gave them little space to work into the game.
Darling, who has played only seven games, is the complete package. He hunts the ball with a willingness rarely seen from a player so young, has an iron grip and can give the ball a roost.
The three imposing figures kicked six goals between them but it was the intent with which they played that made them so intimidating and impressive.
West Coast's skills have improved immeasurably since last year, but they are working to the strengths of Darling, Kennedy and Lynch, who all take contested marks. And that was their strong suits yesterday."[3]
The Age[]
"It was obvious from yesterday's opening bounce that the loss of Kerr and Embley would be more of a hindrance than a disaster. And apparently not all that much of a hindrance, either.
The Eagles had the help of a three-goal breeze in the first quarter and also - with some fearsome tackling and attacks on the football - looked the hungrier and more desperate team.
West Coast stretched Fremantle from the outset with the kind of tall forward line that might once have seemed extinct in an era of run-and-carry football.
Josh Kennedy, Quinten Lynch and Jack Darling all goaled in the first quarter and ruckman Dean Cox also took up station inside the forward 50-metre arc once he ventured on to the ground, having surprisingly started the game on the bench."[4]
PerthNow[]
"West Coast led by as much as 38 points during the third term, but that margin could have been even greater had Lynch, Cox and Shannon Hurn converted very gettable opportunities.
A piece of Fyfe magic – a left-foot goal from 35m out on the boundary line – was the spark Fremantle needed heading into the final term while a timely goal from a quick-thinking Michael Johnson gave the Dockers a sniff of an unlikely comeback win.
But thoughts of an eighth straight Fremantle triumph were dashed when Mark LeCras snapped his second goal of the afternoon just two minutes after the restart."[5]
