West Coast survived a third-quarter charge from bottom-placed Essendon to post their first win over the Bombers at Docklands and take top spot on the ladder. In a physical clash, Daniel Chick was at his best with five goals, well supported by Quinten Lynch with four. Chris Judd was relatively quiet in his 100th game but fellow midfielders Andrew Embley and Michael Braun lifted when required.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"By quarter-time, the Eagles held a seven-point lead without a lot of input from the fab four.

Centre half-forward Ashley Hansen was the best performed of the Eagles forwards as Chick and Quinten Lynch also provided options.

However, instead of going away, the Bombers upped the ante in the second term. The niggling became more intense and confrontational and the Eagles didn't like it. They got rattled. Senior players Judd and Cousins gave away uncharacteristic, undisciplined frees.

Both players looked furious at the treatment they were receiving but could have been just as angry at bigger teammates failing to offer the protection Sheedy had been complaining about midweek."[1]

The Age[]

"Having already reminded his side at half-time that Essendon had decided it was "backs to the wall time", John Worsfold asked them, again, to remember that they had come to Melbourne to win.

One minute in, Braun kicked to Lynch, whose set shot missed. Two minutes later, Ashley Hansen snapped another shot, straighter this time.

At the six-minute mark, Chick led straight up the ground, marked and kicked his fifth goal to grab back a three-point lead. Embley missed a running shot, Judd missed after intercepting the kick-in, and then Dean Cox kept his feet near the goal line, when Mark Bolton didn't.

Jason Laycock took a diving mark, and McPhee sneaked free of Embley, to drag Essendon back within a point, but their goals only delayed the inevitability of the 21-point West Coast win."[2]
