From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"By the 20-minute mark, West Coast had been inside 50m 11 times to four and was winning the clearances 10 to four. It had a four-goal lead which would not be seriously threatened all day.

With the foundations laid by Fletcher and Cox, Cousins and Gardiner then applied the blowtorch in the second quarter.

Cousins had eight possessions, Gardiner kicked three of his four first-half goals. The more the big Eagle looked like a viable marking target in attack, the more Worsfold's team looks capable of going all the way.

The Eagles led by 43 points at the long break and the rest of the match was academic. And as far as a tight-lipped Worsfold was concerned, enough said."[1]

The Sunday Age[]

"In a match labelled a potential grand final preview, West Coast kicked nine goals to two in the first half to set up a matchwinning 43-point lead.

St Kilda continued to battle away, however, and managed to win the third and fourth quarters and avoid what loomed as a blowout, much to the chagrin of Eagles coach John Worsfold. Essentially, the game lacked intensity in the second half.

Michael Gardiner, returning from a knee injury, cast aside a fortnight of off-field dramas to kick four goals for the Eagles, while midfielders Chad Fletcher (31 disposals, two goals) and Ben Cousins (30 disposals, two goals) were again sensational."[2]
