West Coast continued to struggle away from home, falling to Richmond in a tough contest at a gloomy MCG. A young Dean Cox impressed in the ruck in the continued absence of Michael Gardiner, and David Wirrpanda ventured forward for two goals.

From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"Where the little moments started to go right for Richmond, however, they let the Eagles down. Having allowed the Tigers back into a match they could have taken complete control of by the first break - "it would have been handy if we had held them out for one of those late goals," conceded West Coast coach John Worsfold, ``but Richmond deserved to be where they were" - the Eagles took their turn to waste the few chances they got.

David Wirrpunda missed a long set-shot after cutting off a clearing Greg Tivendale kick, Andrew Embley just missed a relatively hard long shot, and later a relatively easy long shot, and Phil Matera only just missed out on making Campbell pay severely for ambitiously popping a handball towards the West Coast goal line.

When Matera swung home a snap 13 minutes into the last quarter, the Eagles were only three points down, but the final half-hour was played with a strange lack of atmosphere and intensity (that may have been caused by the one-team crowd) and they never really looked like snatching the match away from Richmond. If they had, Ashley McIntosh might have handed the ball back to Joel Bowden after giving away a late free kick, instead of holding on to it and then dropping it short. The umpire penalised McIntosh 50 metres and Bowden kicked a point.

From the kick-in, Bowden found Campbell on his own in front of goal, Campbell found Stafford on his own in front of goal and a match that didn't want to be won was won: by Richmond, by a comfortable 21 points"[1]
