From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Ball marked strongly in the first half and was rewarded with three goals, but was largely nullified by the hard-working Cummings after the break.

At the other end, James Hird was in immaculate form during the first half, with Daniel Metropolis and Mitchell White both struggling to keep up.

Hird had two goals within the first seven minutes and kicked his fourth at the beginning of the second term to be among many quality performers.

Somerville was both busy and productive, David Calthorpe and Long added some magic touches, and Stephen Alessio joined a select band to have matched the might of Eagles strong man Glen Jakovich during an absorbing duel."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The lead chopped and changed at the start of the second half until Essendon edged out to an 11 point lead when White presented a gift goal to the opposition when he inexplicably kicked straight to Mark Mercuri.

The third term saw Eagles captain John Worsfold make a rare visit to the forward line, and the venture produced immediate success. He kicked two goals in the third term but saved his best until the start of the last quarter, showing impressive agility to escape Michael Symons and kick a short-range gem from over his shoulder.

But soon after Essendon responded through an accurate snap from Long and when Craig Turley missed a chance for the Eagles, the scores were level 11 minutes into the final term."[2]
