From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"At the start of the last quarter, the Eagles started to exploit Heard and Salmon, who were by now immobile on Essendon's forward line.

Although the Bombers continued to defend stoutly, the Eagles scored the first three goals of the quarter to lead by 24 points midway through the term.

The depleted Dons, however, were not going to give up without a fight and successive goals to Chris Daniher, Mark Harvey and Peter Cransberg reduced the Eagles' lead to six points, one minute into time on.

Essendon continued to attack but the Eagles were able to hold on to record a seven-point win and remain the only undefeated team in the competition."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Eagles once again set up their victory through ferocious tackling.

This allowed them to get off to a flying five-goal start, stunning Essendon with their aggression. Wingman Peter Matera never stopped running and consistently provided his forwards with opportunities through pin-point passing.

Eagles full forward Peter Sumich was the most dangerous forward on the day and finished with five goals, taking his season tally to 38."[2]
