2 D.Brereton (HAW)
1 T.Hall (HAW)
West Coast were embarrassed at home by a ruthless Hawthorn side that piled on eight goals to one in the first quarter and led by almost 70 at the final change, with only a junk time rally by the Eagles preventing an even bigger blowout. John Gastev had a team-high 29 possessions and Phil Scott kicked four goals.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"Hawthorn's destruction of the Eagles in the opening term was built around a defence that outnumbered the home side at least three to one at every contest, and a forward line that had Jason Dunstall and Dermott Brereton in scintillating form.
Hawthorn ground the tentative Eagles into the lush green pastures of Subiaco Oval. The Eagles never looked like getting a system flowing as they were buried time and again.
The dominance was such that Hawthorn's 19-year-old Andrew Gowers had a dream debut on a half-back flank, even though he was given the awesome task of watching two of the most dangerous ruck-rovers in the game, Murray Wrensted and Paul Peos."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Brereton created havoc in attack and proved far too good for the Eagles' Mark Zanotti who was switched in forward line after Brereton kicked his fourth goal early in the third term.
The Hawthorn attack was well-served by a dominant midfield led by wingman Robert DiPierdomenico, who finished with more than 30 possessions, and a rock-solid defence orchestrated by Chris Mew and Gary Ayres.
The Eagles did not have a winner anywhere on the ground and compounded a woeful display with frequent mistakes."[2]
