West Coast slumped to a deplorable triple-figure home defeat at the hands of Carlton, falling to the bottom of the ladder. The home side was beaten in every facet of the game and outscored by Blues forward Charlie Curnow, who broke the ground record with a nine-goal haul. The recalled Xavier O'Neill kicked two goals and Tim Kelly overcame a slow start to record a team-high 27 touches.

Quarter by quarter[]

Both sides went in as named, with Bazzo and Matthew Kennedy starting as subs. The game was played in fine and cool conditions.

From the coach[]

"It was disappointing from start to finish. There were parts there, we might have showed a bit of a fight in the second quarter, but overall, not what we've been training and playing and trying to put out. And Carlton were ruthless, and they put the foot on the throat and made us pay.

"...The weaknesses we had with personnel were exposed from very early on. And, you know, we've been really trying hard to compete around the contest and stoppages and contested possessions and ground balls, those things, we value, and we got exposed, you know, for most of the night. The biggest stat was probably contested marks. We couldn't take one and they took plenty. I think it was minus 12. So, there's a bit of a bit of personnel with that. But there's also just not good enough.

"...I don't think we'd ever say that we gave up, but we got outworked today. And I mean, the contested possessions and ground balls, they weren't miles away. But they transitioned a lot better. And the system and method was better than ours. And we collapse back in on some of the things we were doing in the past. So, I'm disappointed, not surprised. But you know, the way the game blew out was really disappointing. But you know, we've been hanging in there and fighting for quarters here and there. And our next goal is to fight for four quarters and deliver us a win. And we took a step backwards today."[1]

From the papers[]

The Sunday Times[]

"The Blues, coming off successive losses and desperate for a re-set, out-hunted, out-ran, out-tackled, out-thought and out-played West Coast in every category except free kicks and centre clearances.

The numbers were so ugly it was tempting to look away.

Carlton owned territory. They owned the ground. They had 167 more disposals, 80 more marks, 29 marks to 4 inside 50, 22 more inside 50s and 19 more tackles, despite the fact they had their fingerprints all over the Sherrin.

The top six possession winners were Blues and they had eight of the top nine, with Blake Acres living up to his surname with 34. He seemed to have so much acreage on one wing he could have planted a cornfield."[2]
