West Coast's slump hit crisis point with a record loss to Richmond at home under the glare of Friday night lights. The woeful Eagles were never in the contest, giving up seven goals in the opening term as the floodgates remained open for the duration of the game. Josh Kennedy kicked four of his side's eight goals and provided a rare bright spot when his fourth goal took him to 700 career goals, just the 25th player in league history to reach the milestone.

From the coach[]

"We’re clearly not at the level at the moment, there’s so many areas to fix, it’s going to take time. Unfortunately, tonight we butchered the ball and the turnover game, we were unable to defend behind our mistakes. And then they got on top in the midfield, and then they got really brave and put us to the sword, so we’ve got a lot of work to do.

"Of course it does (hurt), nobody wants to be in this situation. But we are, so got to own it, accept it and get better. Like I said, it’s not going to happen in one week, it’s going to be a lot of work in front of us, that’s in everything we do, our program, our fitness, our style of play, our ball movement, all the things that we have identified. We’re on a path, and there’s going to be a little bit of pain, and we’ve got to look for some small wins in the next few weeks. We’ve got a reasonably tough couple of weeks coming up, Brisbane in Brisbane and then Melbourne, so we’re really disappointed, we’re disappointed for our fans and members that have come and watched us tonight, we’re aware of the situation, we’re going to do everything we can to get that right.

"...No doubt we’re in transition, absolutely, but we still need leadership, we still need ‘JK’ (Josh Kennedy) at the moment, we still need Shannon Hurn, and there’s plenty of room for our kids at the moment, with what we’ve got, so we’ve exposed 37 players so far this year, five WAFL players, so there’s going to be plenty of opportunity to get some games into some of our younger players and see where they’re at. See what we can do to assess our list in the next 15 weeks, there’s going to be plenty of opportunity for the younger players to come through and we’ll get a pretty clear picture of where we’re at, at the end of the year."[2]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"West Coast were being crushed in the territory battle, losing the inside-50 count 33-16 (at half-time) - which is bad enough in normal times, but the way they are shifting the ball, it is catastrophic.

Forced to counterattack down the long field from defence there were a lot of chances for turnover errors and they came in droves.

Short continued his great form in the midfield and Daniel Rioli streamed out of defence to carry the ball forward.

One great Liam Ryan mark and the resulting goal was all Eagles fans had to cheer about."[3]

The Age[]

"The Eagles had just as much football as the Tigers, matching their opponents at the clearances, but struggled to connect with their forward line, taking just two marks inside-50 in the first half.

It was a vastly different story at the other end.

The Tigers, who averaged nine marks a game inside-50 before Friday night, had 15 marks inside their arc to the main break and they led by 63 points. The first-half rout included nine unanswered goals, and had Tom Lynch (3.4) been more accurate, the Tigers could have been further ahead.

Lynch finished with 14 marks and 7.5, and was one of the most influential players on the ground."[4]

Reserves[]

Round 3 (30 April)

West Coast's reserves continued their winless start to the season, suffering a sizeable defeat to Peel Thunder at Lathlain. The Eagles started brightly with the first two goals but Peel took control of the game from that point on. Jack Williams kicked three goals and Jamaine Jones had 26 disposals.
