West Coast made light work of horrible wintry conditions and an undermanned Gold Coast, thrashing the Suns to the tune of 92 points. The Eagles had a comfortable lead at halftime and banged through a club-record 12 goals in the third quarter to push the margin into triple figures, before easing up in the last term. Elliot Yeo kicked a career-high four goals from 29 possessions (also a career best), and Chris Masten ran hard all day to rack up 43 disposals.

From the coach[]

"I was concerned this week that we might have a bit of a let down from last week, but I was really pleased with the players and how they handled the week and the game.

We haven't performed too well in the wet in the past and we've made a bit of a focus of it, without going too hard at it. To keep them quite low in inside 50s and to make an impact on the scoreboard ourselves, the game died away a little bit in the last quarter but I thought the damage was done and I was pretty happy with how we played.

...

I think our second tier players are really starting to understand that when they play well, and lead and direct on game day, we normally go pretty close to winning. They're evolving.

...

I think we got smashed in clearances, so we had to really rely on a well-structured back half. I think we did that."

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Suddenly, West Coast has a powerhouse midfield.

At least, that is how it looked in between rain squalls at Domain Stadium on Saturday night as the Eagles shredded a threadbare Gold Coast team to win 21.9 (135) to 6.7 (43) and dig themselves further into second spot on the AFL ladder.

After several seasons of criticism about their engine room, the Eagles produced a midfield tour de force – although what they encountered was barely a piece of resistance.

At the height of the slaughter, West Coast piled on 12 third quarter goals, the best in the club’s history. Josh Kennedy, Mark Lecras and Elliot Yeo all had three goal quarters during the match. Yeo, the midfield find of the season, finished with four."[2]

The Age[]

"Josh Kennedy booted three goals in that amazing third term and four for the game to retake the lead in the Coleman Medal race with 27 for the season (one ahead of Adelaide's Eddie Betts). He was subbed out just before three-quarter-time.

He was clearly unhappy to be subbed out, but with a lingering elbow injury and recovering from a dislocated finger from the week before, the change made sense.

Mark LeCras also kicked three goals in the third term, after having been kept goalless by Andrew Raines in the opening half."[3]

Herald-Sun[]

"Majors to Northampton pair Josh Kennedy and Jamie Cripps in the opening two minutes of the second half killed off any thoughts of a most unlikely Suns comeback, and when Kennedy snapped another from the pocket soon after, the rout was on.

Mark LeCras booted three and dished off another couple as the game started to resemble a full-speed training drill.

At one stage, the Eagles had kicked a major from 10 of their 11 forward entries, with Nic Naitanui getting on top in the centre square and Gold Coast’s defence transformed into witches hats.

Luke Shuey (29 touches) produced a party trick by flicking the ball up to himself before converting from long-range, and when Fraser McInnes soccered one off the ground after a goalsquare scrap, West Coast had produced a 12-goal term for the first time in club history."[4]

East Perth report[]

Round 9 (16 May)

East Perth fell to Claremont in appalling conditions at the Showgrounds, kicking just two goals for the match to lose by 39 points. Kane Lucas was among few contributors for the Royals with 27 disposals. Xavier Ellis ran out for the reserves in his first match since injuring his hamstring in the pre-season.

Appearing for East Perth: Barrass, Brophy, Colledge, Karpany, Lucas, Powell, Waterman. Reserves: Adamson, Ellis
