West Coast were in a strong position at halftime, but gave away six goals to nil in a poor third quarter and although they fought to stay in touch with the Bombers until the end, they were unable to bridge the gap. Daniel Kerr was at his best with 8 clearances and 7 tackles to go with his 28 possessions, and Nic Naitanui and Dean Cox continued their ruck dominance.

From the coach[]

"Yeah, in the end, overall, it was that third quarter where Essendon dominated for a period of it and we couldn't kick a goal. We had a couple of chances, but didn't grab those chances so we weren't good enough in that aspect. We had opportunities to make it either a closer result or get the result our way, but we weren't good enough to take that."

"...The players weren't as composed when we had the chance to go inside 50 in that third quarter. We rushed it in there to their numbers and let them run it out again, where if we had been a bit more composed I think we could have found open players working back inside 50.

"..They started winning the footy (after quarter-time) and dominated possession, that was the big change-up, which was a credit to them. It turned around where we'd been on top and they got right back on top. That was probably the biggest thing and it meant they got it inside 50 quick and when we tried to slow them up, we weren't as composed as we should have been."[2]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Essendon were forced to substitute Brent Stanton out for Angus Monfries at the start of the second half because of a shoulder injury and they had to manage problems for Hocking (back) and Kyle Hardingham (leg).

But they had few problems generally as they turned their two-goal deficit into a 13-point lead in just eight minutes as last week's goal-kicking star Kyle Reimers sprang to life with three goals against tagging machine Adam Selwood.

It again forced West Coast to push extra players back and, though it slowed the onslaught, it also impacted on their own scoring potential. Their three behinds for the term left them with a 24-point deficit and looking down the barrel of a disappointing loss."[3]

The Age[]

"The Bombers were two goals down at halftime but recovered with a six-goal third term and held West Coast goalless to take a 24-point advantage into the last quarter.

After the fireworks of the third term, West Coast outscored the Bombers three goals to two in the last quarter with the result not in doubt.

Watson had 31 possessions including 11 in the vital third term and big forward Stewart Crameri kicked three goals and had 18 touches."[4]

Herald-Sun[]

"Daniel Kerr re-announced himself to the Victorian football public with a fierce hard-at-it display reminiscent of the days of old.

At half-time he had 20 disposals - 11 contested - to go with six clearances.

And with Matt Priddis and Nic Naitanui also in command the Eagles were in total control.

West Coast lead by 21 points early in the second term, but somehow failed to go on and take further control of the scoreboard."[5]
