West Coast equaled their worst start to the season with six losses in the first seven rounds, a disastrous second quarter and general ill-discipline helping Carlton to their first win against the Eagles in seven years. West Coast came out firing in the second half and reduced the margin to just 7 points, but were unable to sustain the momentum and Carlton kicked a handful of late goals to win by 37 points. Dean Cox dominated with 25 possessions and 36 hitouts and Adam Selwood did a solid tagging job on his former captain Chris Judd.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"After an untidy first term when skills from both teams were substandard, Carlton took control of the midfield in the second quarter, feeding its forwards with enough chances to kick eight goals.

By half-time, West Coast was officially a rabble.

Apart from the efforts of Dean Cox, Andrew Embley, David Wirrpanda, Josh Kennedy and Quinten Lynch, West Coast had too many players willing to sit back and study Carlton's work.

Lynch blotted his performance in the second term when he missed a sitter from 20 metres in front of goals.

And, as is often the case, when the ball was carted up to the other end, Cameron Cloke goaled after a strong pack mark."
