West Coast suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of a Geelong side which was just starting to click into gear. A poor third quarter, in which the Eagles were held goalless while giving up five to the opposition, proved the major difference in the game. Chris Judd was a shining light on a dismal day, while midfield partner Daniel Kerr was tagged out of the game by Cameron Ling.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The arm wrestle in the first half featured several close one-on-one duels, with Daniel Kerr unable to break the hard tag of Cameron Ling and Adam Selwood trying to do a similar job on key Cat Gary Ablett. In the end, the Cats won both those contests to give them a crucial edge.

Geelong took a nine-point lead into half-time and opened the attacking floodgates in the third term, booting five goals and holding West Coast to just four behinds.

Two consecutive goals to Gary Ablett opened the lead to 22 points at the eight-minute mark while two more to Brad Ottens and Mathew Stokes set up what seemed to be a match-winning lead.

And the Eagles looked clearly rattled when Steven Armstrong marked at the top of the square, handballed to Adam Hunter on the goal line and watched him get tackled by a rampaging Cameron Mooney."[1]

The Age[]

"Nathan Ablett and Cameron Mooney produced the finishing flourishes that carriedthe margin back out to 39 points, a reply that allowed Thompson and the fans, who share a relationship with his team that allows for hysterical idolatry one moment and savage pessimism the next, to savour the occasion.

The substance of it, though, was witnessed in a tense, defensive first half typified by the performances of the two full-backs, Matthew Scarlett and Darren Glass, who were the best players afield or very close to it, and a third term ignited by cameos from Gary Ablett, Brad Ottens and Mooney, who finished with four goals.

A nine-point half-time Geelong lead was transformed into a 39-point break at the final change by Geelong's sudden ability to cash in on the skill of Bartel and others around the ball to win it first and, more often than not, initiate the play rather than react to it. Chris Judd imperiously dismissed Joel Corey in the second half, after being well held in the first, but other than Matt Rosa out on a wing he had too little assistance to hold back the charge."[2]
