Melbourne easily accounted for an out-of-sorts West Coast, with the sole highlight for the visitors being Ashley Sampi's Mark of the Century contender in the second quarter. The lively goalsneak stood on the heads of teammate Andrew Embley and Demon Paul Wheatley to take a stunning grab. Michael Braun led West Coast with 28 touches and Darren Glass kept Dees skipper David Neitz quiet.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"In a broader context, though, the most unforgettable was still to come: Ashley Sampi's scoreboard reward for a leap on to Paul Wheatley's shoulders and a mark as spectacular as any seen for many years. The conversion came seconds before the main break to cut the deficit to seven points, but Sampi's rarefied air was, in many respects, the Eagles' last gasp.

Melbourne re-emerged to kick four of the next five goals, and 10 of the remaining 14.

West Coast had horrible problems in its forward line and Ben Cousins and Chris Judd - the latter having received a heavy knock and registering almost half as many chunders as possessions to quarter-time - relatively subdued by Simon Godfrey and Chris Heffernan respectively."
