West Coast were well held by St Kilda and fell to their first loss of the season in a low-scoring affair at Waverley. It was a poor way to celebrate Dean Kemp's 200th game, as the Eagles fell behind in the first quarter and were unable to bridge the gap. Phil Read had 26 possessions and Phil Matera was the side's only multiple goalscorer.

From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"St Kilda was ferocious across half-forward in the opening minutes, breaking away to an 18-point lead with goals from Steven Sziller, Gavin Mitchell and Barry Hall.

The danger signs for West Coast's forward line were present from the onset. Scott Cummings did not lead at the ball, giving Darryl Wakelin supremacy, and captain Nathan Burke returned to defence against the fleet Phil Matera - the only threatening Eagle forward early on, breaking loose in the final minute to score the Eagles' first goal.

Saints full-forward Jason Heatley was finding it difficult against All-Australian full-back Ashley McIntosh, so Hall made the move to full-forward early in the second half and rewarded the Saints with another two goals for the game, including their only goal for the second quarter, after the siren. Hall outmuscled his opponents and collected 12 marks, continuing on from his strong display against Carlton last week. He dominated Glen Jakovich, youngster Laurie Bellotti and then Jason Ball, as the Eagles lost a potential forward to mind him."[1]
