From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"The game began with gusto, with the players full of running and busting to get to each other. Neither side got a decisive break in the opening term and the Eagles wasted opportunities in front of goal.

They began to hit their straps in the second quarter, kicking seven goals and paving the way to victory. An interesting feature was that six of those goals came from scouting the ball off the pack, or gathering the loose ball in front of goal.

It wasn't Peter Sumich leading and marking strongly. In fact, his opponent, Chris Langford, was one of the few Hawks to carry out his job.

Goals came from the West Coast fleet-footed brigade. Dean Kemp got away from Gary Ayres for three goals, all from loose-ball opportunities in front of goal. Chris Lewis and Karl Langdon snapped goals from opportunities in general play.[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Significantly, West Coast did it without full-forward Peter Sumich playing a dominant role.

He finished the day with 2.5, including three shots which hit the post, and was well held by Chris Langford.

But the way the other Eagles fed off Sumich was one of the highlights of the match. Their running players including Dean Kemp (three goals), Karl Langdon (three) and Peter Matera celebrated in fine fashion."[2]
