West Coast defeated fellow newcomers Brisbane in a rain-soaked encounter under lights at the WACA, holding on to finish 19 points ahead of the Bears despite some wayward kicking. Skipper Ross Glendinning led from the front with seven marks in the tricky conditions to go with three goals.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"Despite the great effort by Brisbane in reducing a half-time deficit of 28 points to 21 at the last change, West Coast seemed set to win easily at the start of the last quarter.
Instead, the Perth team had to face 20 minutes of tense, competitive football before its only goal for the quarter - a long, left-foot kick from giant forward Laurie Keene - gave it the relative safety of a 19-point lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.
Former Fitzroy rover Bernie Harris put Brisbane within 15 points with a long goal from a forward pocket less than three minutes after the start of the last quarter.
Then West Coast, which had squandered scoring chances itself for most of the night, had to look on as Brisbane missed four successive opportunities. Three of the four one-pointers could easily have been goals."[1]
