An injury-depleted West Coast were given a scare by the Roos but managed to increase their lead every quarter en route to a 25-point win. Scott Selwood had 35 possessions and new recruit Josh Hill kicked four goals.

From the coach[]
"At no point during the week did we ever get down or worried about the injuries. It's something you deal with. The issue was I think North Melbourne have shown this season they have a really good squad coming through and I'm sure they felt with some of the outs we had it was a really good opportunity for them. So to get our squad balance right for the game and the players who came in to perform the way they did showed good maturity. Also shows the squad is pretty well drlled on the way we play regardless of who comes in or out.h
"...We have been building this midfield for a number of years now. They are still reasonably young but it's coming on really well, not only their ability to score goals but defend as well to keep pressure on the opposition. They have a good attitude and Burnsy has brought them on really well.
"We had a lot of inside 50s and a lot of scoring shots and with North getting a lot of numbers deep and trying to take up our space, it meant a lot of guys could have shots from further out."[1]
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Daniel Kerr had a bullseye as big as the centre circle on his back as Ryan Bastinac applied a hard tag while Brent Harvey appeared happiest when wrestling with the West Coast champion.
Cox, meanwhile, was the most influential player on the ground despite the blue collar midfield work of Scott Selwood and Matt Priddis, the clinical defensive display from Shannon Hurn and the elusive efforts of Josh Hill who booted four goals.
Cox's duel with Hamish McIntosh was at times like a couple of cranky dinosaurs wrestling over a carcass but the West Coast veteran had the biggest single impact on the game.
His tap to Scott Selwood in the second term set up the Eagles terrier to boot his team's seventh goal."[2]
The Age[]
"Ashton Hams flying bump on Swallow provided a contentious end to the first half and the Eagles made a move early in the second with successive goals.
But North hit back with three of their own as momentum continued to swing.
As Adam Selwood left the ground with an agonising hand injury, the Eagles replied through Shannon Hurn, Hill and Matt Rosa, setting up an intriguing finish.
With the gap at 13 points to the start the final term, the Eagles finally squeezed the life out of the Kangaroos with Hill's fourth and Dean Cox's first, the win setting up a blockbuster with high-flying Essendon next Saturday."[3]
PerthNow[]
"Shannon Hurn provided excellent drive off half-back, kicking two goals and inspiring his side back into action on several occasions when the chips were down.
Josh Hill played a lone hand up forward for West Coast with four goals – one in each quarter – in the absence of the club’s three major goalkickers from last season.
Jack Darling and Quinten Lynch were held to one goal each by resilient North defenders Michael Firrito, Scott Thompson and Luke Delaney.
Dean Cox found the going tough early on up against Kangaroos big man Hamish McIntosh, but eventually prevailed in a classic ruck duel."[4]
