"The game started with a frenetic Nic Naitanui dash from the very first centre bounce. He shanked the kick on goal straight to a Melbourne opponent, but that was one of very few things that went right for the Demons in that opening term - or the entire match for that matter.
A minute-and-a-half later Darling had the game's first goal, easily nudging a Demon opponent under the ball for a mark. It signalled the start of the first-quarter procession.
Embley swooped on a loose ball after a goal-front stoppage six minutes later for the second. Mark Nicoski hung on to a high-pressure mark on the lead 40m out for the third, Josh Kennedy nailed the fourth from a free kick and Embley booted a wonderful banana goal under extreme pressure for the fifth."[2]

"At times during the first term the Eagles looked like they were in a training drill.
Certainly the Demons resembled tackling dummies as the Eagles harassed, intimidated and - in Andrew Embley's case - freakishly snapped their way into a 31-point lead.
Embley's brilliant banana goal was the one piece of first-term play assured of making a highlight reel.
But the Eagles' pressure, especially in the forward 50, was equally as impressive if somewhat less spectacular in the traditional sense." [3]

Melbourne continued to sabotage its efforts to get back into the contest in the third term with some terrible bloopers, and struggled to contain a rampant group of West Coast on-ballers that ran in waves through the midfield in transition.
