The out-of-form West Coast took the contest up to Fremantle for three quarters, but a run of eight unanswered goals either side of three-quarter time saw the Dockers get out to an unassailable lead and win their sixth straight Western Derby. Adding injury to insult, Chris Masten injured his knee in the second quarter after having what looked to be a breakout game to that point. Ruck pair Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui had the better of their duel against Aaron Sandilands, while rookie Dockers midfielder Michael Barlow won the Glendinning Medal.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"After a first half that had more injuries than inspiration - the most serious to Chris Masten with a posterior cruciate ligament - a knife edge finish threatened.

But the moment that decided Derby XXI was as hesitant and uninspiring as the rest of the Eagles' season.

With the Dockers leading by 11, Eagles skipper Darren Glass tried to fumble over the goal line only to allow Michael Johnson toe-poke the ball over.

Four goals followed, and Glass' record of never having won a derby as Eagles skipper remains. Mark Harvey remains unbeaten, and the Dockers remain in the top four."
