In a tightly-fought derby, Fremantle overcame the loss of ruckman Aaron Sandilands with a broken jaw to inflict West Coast's first loss of the season. West Coast trailed at every change but never by more than a goal as the lead changed hands a dozen times. Despite the loss, captain Chris Judd won the Ross Glendinning Medal and was booed by the Fremantle home crowd.

From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"When Chris Judd lifted for one final burst and threatened to wrench the game from Fremantle's grasp, the Dockers had two clear choices after leading at every change. They could wilt and accept an honourable loss, a road chosen all too often in the past, or they could lift again and fight to the finish.
Once again the Dockers refused to play the victim. Judd goalled for the Eagles to take the lead, Peter Bell goalled to take it back. Brent Staker put the Eagles in front in the dying minutes, but Paul Hasleby put the Dockers back in front in the final seconds and it was Fremantle who won the final clearance.
Fremantle, on their knees and hanging on like grim death in the closing seconds against St Kilda in Launceston, were on their feet going toe to toe swinging mightily and holding ground when the derby finished. No player epitomised the approach more than Josh Carr who pressed forward relentlessly in the last quarter."[1]
The Age[]
"By half-time, Judd's possession count had hit 23, with eight clearances and five inside 50s.
His dominance was quelled after the long break, but he still bobbed up when West Coast really needed him. When the Eagles were down by two points early in the last term, it was Judd who found space when others ran into walls to kick the goal that put them in front. He was named the Ross Glendinning medallist as best player in the derby.
Fremantle's back line was rock solid, with Michael Johnson and Antoni Grover in terrific form. They restricted Quinten Lynch and Mark Seaby, though Seaby, West Coast's back-up ruckman, still kicked two goals.
Des Headland and Josh Carr ran forward to give Fremantle a goalkicking midfield, but Andrew Embley gave the Dockers problems in attack because he was too quick for Steven Dodd.
The lead changed hands four times in the final term, but Fremantle would not be denied. Paul Hasleby kicked a goal late in the quarter, after receiving a perfect pass from captain Peter Bell, to give his team the lead and a win that will never be forgotten."[2]
