From the papers[]
The Sunday Age[]
"West Coast simply could not bridge the gap when it counted. Peter Wilson missed a soda in that tough final quarter, as did Jason Ball. They might have been balanced out by some of Silvagni's misses, but Malthouse and his team do not like giving any sucker an even break, despite having a healthy respect for the Blues.
In the end it boiled down to a battle of attrition and backlines. Carlton's defence, as it has done all season, met every challenge and the Blues can now claim that they rival the Eagles (at full strength) in the back half.
After Silvagni put Sumich out of business, Peter Dean, Michael Sexton and Ang Christou mopped up with the poise and class they have shown in each of Carlton's previous five victories.
There was not a lot happening in attack for either side and while the Blues found it virtually impossible to move around Glen Jakovich, they showed a willingness to share the ball and the goals around."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The Blues set up their victory with superb first and third quarters, where they used the breeze favouring the scoreboard end of the ground to full effect.
They booted five goals to nil in the first term and followed this up with five goals to one in the third quarter to hold a 32-point lead at the last change.
The Eagles, fielding their weakest team for the season due to injury, battled hard but simply lacked firepower.
Carlton's defence was superb, with Andrew McKay thrashing Brett Heady while Michael Sexton and Peter Dean were also good performers."[2]
