From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"One surprise option was Ashley McIntosh, perhaps the best full-back in the competition on recent form, who floated dangerously across the half-forward line yesterday.

With centre half-forward Brett Spinks, McIntosh helped exploit a lack of height in the North defence.

Peter Sumich also threatened to give the Kangaroos' defence a work-out when he kicked two goals in the first 10 minutes. But Michael Martyn and a torn hamstring in the third quarter took care of him, although Sumich's lack of influence probably underlines the dominance of the other Eagle forwards.

In the first quarter-and-a-half, it was mainly their accurate kicking (10 goals straight to the eighth-minute mark of the second quarter) that kept the Eagles well clear of North.

But while Carey continued to do it on his own, almost all the Eagles forwards fired."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Kangaroos, without the injured Corey McKernan and Peter Mann, simply lacked the height on their backline to contain West Coast's abundance of tall forwards.

And North's defence was under heavy pressure throughout as West Coast took control of the midfield launching one attack on goal after another.

Most of West Coast's defenders were equally impressive and had the better of their opponents, led by Michael Brennan, Guy McKenna and John Worsfold.

In fact, the only Eagle to have an off day was Glen Jakovich who was outgunned by North captain and star centre half-forward Wayne Carey."[2]
