"The Eagles began to assert their stamp on the match as they gained ascendancy across their half-forward and centre lines through forwards Heady and Chris Lewis and wingman Peter Matera.
Full-forward Sumich finished with five goals but was well held for most of the match by Shane Ellen.
Footscray found opportunities increasingly difficult at the other end of the ground.
