From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"Once the Eagles had broken Geelong midway through the second quarter, their forwards had a picnic.

Loving every centimetre of VFL Park's open spaces, Peter Sumich led left, right and centre. Not even Superman could have kept up with Sumich. Needless to say, it was too much to ask of poor old Austin McCrabb.

Feeding the ball to Sumich were two of the classiest forwards in the game - Brett Heady and Chris Lewis. What a duo! Heady led young Jamie Lamb a merry dance in the first half and did the same to three other opponents after half-time. Chris Lewis had a great battle with Ken Hinkley but you cannot give latitude to this young magician, as he showed with his two goals late in the second quarter."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"West Coast set up its 45-point victory in the opening term when it contained Geelong, who was kicking with a strong wind, to level the scores at three goals four at the first break.

The Eagles opened up with a seven goal to two second quarter to go in at half-time with a six-goal buffer. Geelong made a gallant effort after half-time to peg back West Coast, but the closest it got was 10 points late in the third term.

The superiority of wingman Chris Mainwaring, Craig Turley and Peter Matera at ground level and the close checking of John Worsfold cut out most of the Cats' midfielders."[2]
