An inaccurate West Coast ground out a 10 point victory over the winless Carlton, with a four-goal burst late in the third term proving decisive. In a scrappy contest, Andrew Gaff stood out with 31 possessions and two goals, and Mark LeCras bobbed up for three second-half goals as the Eagles moved into top spot on the ladder.

From the coach[]

"It was definitely a grind game. We anticipated that. The suggestion that it was going to be a walkover was ridiculous considering where Carlton are as a footy club, where they're at and the talent they've got coming through. Having said that, we missed a few shots. But in the end it was good to get the four points. They played a really good brand and we struggled at times and couldn't break the game open.

"We just grinded (sic) it out. The end of the third quarter we kicked four in a row, that blew it open a little bit. We've got a few sore boys that really performed manfully throughout the night, which I won't go into. But to grind it out and have a good victory at the 'G, we'll take it and we'll lick our wounds and we'll keep going.

"...I thought Nic had significant impact at stages, but I thought Phillips and Casboult held their own as well. The stoppages would've felt pretty similar. I think the clearance numbers and scores from stoppages, I'm not totally sure what happened there but it was just a grind for both teams. Field position, how you set up, what you want to do to win a stoppage, setting up forwards and all that stuff was a bit of a battle all day. We couldn't stop the Blues getting that extra behind the play on occasions. But having said that, we did turn the ball over 28-29 times in our front half".

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Elliot Yeo (26 possessions and 11 tackles), Andrew Gaff (31 disposals and two goals) and Chris Masten (27 touches and a goal) were key contributors for Adam Simpson’s side.

Mark LeCras was West Coast’s leading goalkicker and his third and final goal with just under four minutes remaining in the match snuffed out Carlton’s challenge.

There was a lot to like about the play of a Carlton side that was coming off an embarrassing 86-point loss to North Melbourne and missing the likes of Marc Murphy, Matthew Kreuzer and Jacob Weitering.

Patrick Cripps, the skipper in place of the injured Murphy, was outstanding with 34 touches and 11 tackles. Kade Simpson (31 disposals) was also important."[1]

The Age[]

"The Eagles won it with one spectacular burst in the last 10 minutes of the third quarter.

To that point of the game, West Coast’s poor conversion (5.11 to half-time) had kept the contest interesting. But in that 10 minutes the Eagles banged on four consecutive goals to take the margin out from three points to 28 points at three-quarter time.

Carlton’s woes in that decisive period were summed up by 100th-gamer Liam Jones, who was having a decent night in his milestone game, but whose overly speculative kick across defensive goal at the 31-minute mark of the quarter spilled from Lachie Plowman’s hands, was trapped by West Coast’s Andrew Gaff and resulted in a gifted goal.

The Blues were admirable, kicking four goals to one in the final quarter to control the damage. But in truth, West Coast were on top in general play for most of the game, only frailty in front of goal costing them a big win. The Eagles had no particularly bad offenders; the disease infected them all. They won the inside-50 count, and had 10 more scoring shots."[2]

East Perth report[]
