West Coast continued their dominance over the competition's newest team, smashing the Giants after quarter-time to record a percentage-boosting win. A goal on the quarter-time siren put GWS within 4 points but the Eagles held them scoreless in the next term and to just a single goal for the remainder of the match. Josh Kennedy overcame an elbow injury to kick six goals and Chris Masten amassed 33 possessions.

From the coach[]
"We were expecting a pretty fierce contest. They're going to be a very good side with their talent and how they're coached, we just didn't want it to be tonight. You can see what they're building towards, and how they're going about it is really impressive. We were really aware of their formline and we wanted to bring pressure, and I think we did that for almost the full four quarters. That was the main focus, to put pressure on the game and do it for four quarters.
I thought our defenders stood up, we lost Schoey there for a little while, we lost a few soldiers in and out of the game but I thought our back six got rewarded for some good pressure up the field. A lot of dirty ball came in and we were able to rebound it. And then we got the game played in our half, and I thought our forward line supplied a lot of pressure themselves, so that was pretty much the game.
I felt the game was ping-ponging a little bit at stages, and they really came with a focus of speed. Sometimes that's going to go either way, they sent some numbers up to the stoppages and we tried to counteract that our own way. It wasn't working at stages, I thought there was a little period there for 5-10 minutes at the end of the first where we lost a bit of momentum but for the most part I was reasonably comfortable with how the game was moving.
...
We had some real simple focus areas before the game. Our leadership group is evolving and I thought they took a step forward tonight with how they went about it. We won in the right way - started with pressure and intensity and the rest will come. That was the message and they were on the front foot with it."
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Naitanui got forward to kick two second quarter goals, Hill added a third for himself and the only concern for the Eagles was the departure of forward Josh Kennedy mid term after suffering an elbow injury.
The Giants were held scoreless for the term and wilted in the face of fierce Eagles tackling.
They were also the victims of their own sloppy ball use, with the Eagles consistently forcing them into turnovers and getting the ball headed the other way at speed.
Masten and Sheppard joined Yeo in his first half possession fest. Shuey, Sam Butler, Wellingham and Priddis were others to see plenty of the ball."[2]
The Age[]
"There were early signs of the nightmares of the last meeting between the two clubs when Josh Kennedy marked just nine seconds into the first term – then went back and kicked the game's first goal after just 35 seconds.
Kennedy booted 11.0 in that round eight contest last season. He had 2.1 at quarter-time on Saturday and was looking at a big night out. Phil Davis was able to breathe a bit easier midway through the second term though when the Coleman Medal leader (he has 22 for the season) was forced from the ground with an elbow injury.
But he returned to kick four second-half goals to finish with six."[3]
Herald-Sun[]
"The Eagles set up the win with a strong second term, adding 5.2 while holding the Giants scoreless to open up a six-goal lead at half-time.
West Coast had 17 inside 50s to six for the quarter as they got on top in the midfield after the visitors’ on-ball unit, led by rising star Dylan Shiel, won the clearance and contested ball counts in the opening term.
Shiel finished with a game-high 36 touches and six clearances but had little support.
It was also a night for surprises as some of West Coast’s lesser lights decided it was time to stand up.
Sharrod Wellingham and Josh Hill, both maligned at times since arriving in the Eagles’ nest, were important contributors."[4]
East Perth report[]
Round 7 (2 May)
East Perth fell to South Fremantle at Leederville Oval, with the Bulldogs kicking five goals to nil in the third quarter to seize control, then holding on in the last term to win by 13 points. Appearing for East Perth: Barrass, Brophy, Colledge, Hutchings, Lucas, Lycett, Waterman. Reserves: Adamson
