West Coast brought back memories of some of their early dominant performances against the new kids in town, with an aggressive display leading to a comfortable 35 point win in Ben Cousins' 250th game. Michael Gardiner and Chad Fletcher continued their good starts to the season, the latter racking up 27 touches and 3 goals. The post-match celebrations stirred up controversy when Ashley Sampi was voted the winner of the Ross Glendinning Medal, only for Glendinning himself to overrule the voters and award the medal to Gardiner.

The Age[]
"The Worsfold battle plan was clear: stop Fremantle from tagging Ben Cousins while at the same time shutting down Matthew Pavlich.
The plan to free up Cousins from the harassment of Fremantle's Matthew Carr involved a vital contribution from Eagles' tagger Rowan Jones. At every stoppage, Jones got between Carr and Cousins to give the Eagles' skipper an unhindered run at the ball on most occasions.
While Cousins was being freed up, Daniel Chick was doing a terrific job of tagging Pavlich.
Pavlich, Fremantle's most influential player, did not get a touch in the first quarter. By half-time, when the Eagles held a 30-point lead, his tally had risen to seven. But he was having little influence on the game as a midfielder."<ref>John McGrath & Craig O'Donoghue, The Age (28 April 2003), "Woosha's battle plan pays off": http://newsstore.fairfax.com.au/apps/viewDocument.ac?page=1&sy=age&kw=sampi+and+waterhouse&pb=age&dt=selectRange&dr=entire&so=relevance&sf=text&sf=headline&rc=10&rm=200&sp=nrm&clsPage=1&docID=AGE030428MAB0G2O91J5</ref?
