West Coast bounced back to record their first win in Melbourne, at the expense of the reigning premiers. After a slow start, the Eagles fought their way back into the match and finished two goals clear. East Fremantle products Chris Mainwaring and Murray Wrensted each had 26 possessions and were among West Coast's 13 individual goalscorers.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"The Eagles were led by Chris Mainwaring, a man who is short of stature but big of heart. Ron Alexander gave Mainwaring, a typically nuggety back pocket player, the task of tackling Brownlow medallist Robert DiPierdomenico on the wing, and he performed his task with distinction.
Boring in from the outset, Mainwaring won so many kicks that DiPierdomenico was dragged from the ground and later bobbed up at centre half-forward. It was a sad day for Dipper, whose form is so poor that he must be in grave danger of being dropped. But he was not the only big-name Hawk to fail. Dermott Brereton, playing his first game after injury, was thoroughly beaten by Mark Zenotti and in the centre, talented Murray Wrensted overshadowed Gary Buckenara."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The Eagles destroyed Hawthorn around the packs, with small men Robert Wiley, Chris Mainwaring and Chris Lewis picking up easy kicks on the visitor's forward line.
The Eagles did not have a single dominating forward, but showed their scoring versatility with 13 players kicking goals.
For Hawthorn, only captain Michael Tuck could hold his head up after the game.
Time and time again, the veteran ruck rover moved the ball forward, but found his teammates well out of position."[2]
