West Coast did it easily against a disparate Lions side, skating away to a comfortable early lead and holding sway in the middle for most of the day. Sam Butler turned back the clock with 28 possessions and two goals out of defence, and Jamie Cripps overcame an early corky to lay 11 tackles in the forward line.

From the coach[]

"We were really pleased to get the win. The way we turned up last week against Fremantle was disappointing so we had a big focus on the start of the game. I thought our pressure early and intensity on the game was up and got reward for effort. Went off the ball there in the second quarter. It was pretty hot out there and windy, the conditions weren't as good out there as they probably looked, but it was pretty sloppy at times.

...

I felt like there was some basic errors from both sides that we probably made the most of when they made turnovers, but we gave the ball up as well at certain stages. We were both pretty young sides, and both sides have got some injuries as well. Not ideal but we're really happy that we're 2-2 and hopefully we get some players back in the next couple of weeks.

...

We've got a lot of things to work on. We're not exactly where we want to be with the balance of our side, but I think if we turn up with the intent we did today we give ourselves every chance to compete well. We're still finding the right balance, I think. Sharrod Wellingham played down back today and did a good job. Shannon Hurn was getting run with so we had to put Rosa down back for a little while, so we're still working on that."

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The Eagles appeared vulnerable ahead of the clash after their defence was ravaged by the unavailability of Mitch Brown, Eric Mackenzie and Jeremy McGovern.

However, the Lions showed why they are ranked last in the league in defence, and offense too for that matter, by failing to apply any pressure.

Even the return of captain Tom Rockliff (16 touches) three weeks early from broken ribs could not inspire Brisbane."[2]

The Age[]

"Played in the face of a chilly westerly, this match between two battling teams was never likely to be among this season's more memorable encounters. If your idea of entertainment is a collection of bloopers, out-takes and B-sides, though, the Lions might have served up a definitive worst-of.

The Eagles will be happy enough to secure an away win on the other side of the country – four points are four points, after all. But it's hard to measure what they can take out of this game, other than a regrettable rise in their injury toll to key players, Luke Shuey hobbling down the race in the third quarter with an ankle problem."[3]

Herald-Sun[]

"A coast-to-coast goal to Hill in the third term underlined West Coast’s superiority while a Mark Le Cras goal earned from a holding the ball free kick late in the term also reinforced the difference between the sides.

West Coast led by 28 points at half-time but should have been much further in front by the main break given Brisbane’s woeful skill level.

The Eagles led by 26 points at the first change after completely dominating the opening term but inaccuracy in front of goal stopped the visitors from putting the Lions away."[4]

East Perth report[]

East Perth made short work of Perth, demolishing the struggling Demons by 103 points. Alec Waterman was prominent with 24 possessions and 2 goals and Rowen Powell also kicked a pair in his senior debut.

Appearing for East Perth: Barrass, Brophy, Colledge, Hutchings, Lucas, Main, McInnes, Powell(*first East Perth appearance), Sinclair, Waterman. Reserves: Adamson
