An undermanned West Coast put up a fight for a quarter before being completely overwhelmed by the Cats' suffocating pressure, failing to kick a goal for the remaining three quarters to record their lowest score since 2001. Andrew Gaff was one of precious few Eagles to keep running, picking up 24 possessions to be West Coast's best.

Quarter by quarter[]

West Coast were decimated before the game began, with LeCras (arm), Masten (hamstring), Glass (hip) and Shuey (suspended) all unavailable. Wellingham and rookie Sheed came back into the side and veterans Hill and Butler were called up for their first games of the season. Lycett also came in for the first time, in place of Sinclair as the club continued with its three-ruck policy. A sixth change was made before the bounce with McGinnity in as starting sub for his first game of the year in place of Rosa who had gastro. Geelong made two changes with Corey Enright and Taylor Hunt returning to the side in place of Jackson Sheringham (omitted) and their Mitch Brown, who had an ankle injury. The match was played under lights at Kardinia Park.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The scoreline was close early but the myriad other numerical measures of the modern game weighed heavily in favour of the locals. They went to the quarter-time break with a plus 29 advantage in uncontested possessions, 28 up in disposals overall and plus 18 in marks. Thereafter they set about putting a gap where it actually matters.

The second quarter was a rout, Tom Hawkins, Bartel twice and Selwood – already wearing the mandatory bandage to stopper his weekly head wound – all goaling before Selwood found Hamish McIntosh for the fifth of the term, and Hawkins crowned another full-chested lead and vice-like mark with a 55-metre bomb.

West Coast had no answer to any of them, nor to the wave of blue and white ball carriers who streamed toward and away from them. By the long break the margin was 38 points, the game effectively over, and those statistical pointers were becoming embarrassing – marks 60-24, uncontested possessions 135-79, inside 50s 32-19."

Herald-Sun[]

"The Cats were typically selfless with each other, bold with their aggressive approach to rebound down the centre corridor and fierce with the attack on the ball and the ball-carrier.

Geelong blew the contest open with a devastating second quarter of what was effectively keepings off.

The Cats controlled the ebb and flow of the game, monopolised possession from the centre bounces and quickly asserted their authority after a wasteful opening term."

East Perth report[]

With their ranks depleted after a number of regulars were called up to West Coast, East Perth were thrashed by arch rivals West Perth, losing 22.17.149 to 7.7.49. Simon Tunbridge kicked 3 goals on his return from a broken nose, and former Falcon Mark Hutchings was one of few who could hold his head high.

Appearing for East Perth: Brennan, Carter, Hutchings, Karpany(*first East Perth appearance), Maginness*, Main*, McInnes, Smith, Tunbridge, Wilson. Reserves: Powell
