A horribly inaccurate West Coast gave up the lead in the second quarter and couldn't get it back, going down by 24 points in an altogether forgettable game. Scott Selwood recorded 32 possessions while tagging Chris Judd out of the game and Mark LeCras kicked two goals from 23 touches.

From the coach[]

"Probably the issue for us is that the game was up for grabs tonight. Regardless of how Carlton generated their scores, we generated as many opportunities. One team was going to end up in front and tonight was one of those games where everything was pretty even. A lot of the things we asked the players to work on (were OK). I am certainly not questioning our endeavour. We just weren't good enough in the end to capitalise on our opportunities. Every game you play you could pick out one little thing and say they were on top but I could say we were on top in other areas - inside 50s, we had more shots on goal than Carlton. I am sure they would be concerned about a lot of those things if they had've lost. When you win you can put it away and say "we don't care". Overall there are areas we want to get a bit better at."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The plot and the rot had set in early.

The plot came in the form of Malthouse's match-ups, with Armfield going to rebounder Shannon Hurn, Curnow to Andrew Gaff, with McLean and Daniel Kerr and Carrazzo and Matt Priddis head to head in the midfield.

The rot came in the form of an early points tally, which had climbed to six before the home team got the ball in the deadly hands of Mark LeCras, close enough for him to nail their first goal on the run.

The seed that this might be one of "those" nights was planted in the heads of the Eagles fans and perhaps a few players early. By game's end Callum Sinclair (twice) and Bradd Dalziell had missed sitters."[2]

PerthNow[]

"Mark LeCras gave the home side a glimmer of hope when his second goal 15 minutes into the third term ended a run of six majors to the rampant Blues. But West Coast's tally of 4.16 still said plenty about why it was in such dire trouble.

Yarran's lightning pace came back to haunt the Eagles when he panicked Eric Mackenzie into giving away a holding free kick in the goal square, converting to push the lead beyond five goals again.

It was now or never for a response and it finally came as Jack Darling, Andrew Gaff and Daniel Kerr combined for the last three goals of the third term to close the margin to a manageable 15 points at the final change.

It was a situation that required some magic and Kerr was the man to oblige as he landed his sensational drop punt from the point where the 50m arc intersected the boundary line at the Subiaco end of the ground."[3]
