In the rain, West Coast went goalless until halftime and trailed for much of the match before hitting the front early in the final quarter thanks to two Jack Darling goals. The Eagles then withstood a late Cyril Rioli-led charge to win an inaccurate contest by 5 points. Daniel Kerr was at his best in the wet with 33 possessions and 9 clearances, and Eric MacKenzie kept Lance Franklin to a single goal.

From the coach[]

"It was a pretty tight, tough game. Both teams are pretty close. A lot of the shots on goal were under a lot of pressure and often from a fair way out.

"In the first quarter we really had control of the game in terms of where the ball was, but then they really fought back and took control in the second quarter so we saw it as pretty much at nil-all at half-time with a big arm wrestle and contest to come in the second half. Not much changed in our focus at half-time other than saying 'treat it as though whoever wins this half is going to win the game'.

"I can't remember what the score was at three-quarter time but our approach was the same. We just focused on a few things that we thought would happen for us and we were doing pretty well, and some things we had to be aware of that Hawthorn were doing well."[1]

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"West Coast had more of the ball, but in damp conditions couldn't establish field position. Its leading ball winners Daniel Kerr, Beau Waters and Scott Selwood were winning most of their touches back of centre. Its two perceived areas of advantage heading into the game - in the ruck and their tall forwards - had been cancelled out.

And Hawthorn was prepared to kick its way through the press and was doing it effectively enough to not get hurt on the scoreboard.

West Coast appeared to shake off the shackles early in the third term when, after going goalless for half a game for the first time in eight years, it goaled twice in the first three minutes of the third quarter."[2]

The Sunday Times[]

"Darling put the Eagles in front early in the final term with his first and kicked his second on the run to light up the crowd.

It said everything about the nature of the contest that at four goals to three mid-way through the last quarter, West Coast's 10-point lead was the biggest break either side had enjoyed all night.

Kerr's goal gave the Eagles some comfort but Rioli, well held by Adam Selwood throughout, seized the moment to kick two goals and narrowly miss his opportunity for a third in the space of six minutes to get pulses racing."[3]
